The rise of giving sanctuary in religious structures
Sanctuary topics from the bible...
In response to the executive order temporarily
banning immigrants and refugees from seven predominately Muslim countries, we,
the undersigned members of the Beverly Multi-faith Coalition, stand together
against intolerance and for compassion.
We
stand with those seeking safety from persecution and violence, regardless of
their country of origin or faith. We stand with Massachusetts Attorney
General Maura Healey, supported by Governor Charlie Baker, in pursuing legal
challenges to the order. We reject the false choice between
security and human decency.
The sacred call to protect
the vulnerable and the stranger is ancient and universal. The Torah (also
known as the Five Books of Moses) states 36 times – more than any other
commandment - that we must not wrong the stranger. The Christian scriptures
teach us, in word and deed of Jesus Christ and his disciples, that we have a
responsibility to stand up for those amongst us who are the most vulnerable,
who have been hurt the most and those who have been least heard. And in the
Buddhist Lovingkindness Meditation we are admonished not to despise any being
in any state, but to cultivate a boundless mind which cherishes all living
beings.
A threat to anyone's religious liberty is a threat to everyone's
religious liberty, and we stand solidly with our Muslim brothers and sisters.
We commit ourselves to the
sacred work of protecting the dignity of all human beings. May all beings
be happy, peaceful, free from suffering, and live in safety.
