Important Action required before THIS Wednesday March 8th when the School Committee Meets:

This week on  Wed., Mar. 8th at the Beverly School Committee meeting,  a second discussion will be held about making our school district a "Sanctuary District" .  If you would like to see this happen  in Beverly, please send the attached letter to the school committee members and mayor.  If you need a bit more information on what this would mean, the letter contains a brief description.

Here is the list of email addresses.   I've heard back from Kris Silverstein, Lorinda Visnick and John Mulladay.  Apparently they've received MANY letters, but more can only help.   Those of us who support this initiative can also  consider attending the meeting to be part of the discussion.  A copy of the format for the letter/email is also posted below.

Subject: Beverly Schools Sanctuary District
Dear Members of the Beverly Public School Committee:
I am writing to you today to ask you to declare our school district a "Sanctuary District". In light of the fast and furious anti immigrant orders coming from the White House in the past 2 weeks, it is time as a city to proactively protect and assure the most vulnerable in our schools.
In making this request, I am asking you as a parent, taxpayer and concerned and compassionate  citizen to state that our school system will do all that we can to protect our children, and to ensure a safe, productive learning environment that supports both children and families.  Please stand up for our children, of all faiths and origins, and help up stand up for the most fundamental tenants of our democracy.
Examples of ways to provide sanctuary include:
District won’t release student information to federal officials unless they have to by law.
District will notify local legal aid groups if immigration authorities request to visit a school.
In addition, the district will require school personnel to make every effort to notify parents and allow parents to be present if a student is questioned by law enforcement.
The US Supreme Court has ruled that ALL students in our district (through 12th grade) have a right to education regardless of immigration status. Let us be sure that these kids have a safe, supportive school system.
Our State law requires that all students regardless of religion, national origin or citizenship status can access education here. Again, it incumbent upon us now, to make sure these students and their families know that our schools are SAFE.
Thank you for your time, and your support and advocacy. Please let me know how I can further support this initiative.
Respectfully,
Name
